Rumour has it that the Leap Year Tradition originated with us folk here on the Emerald Isle!
February 29th, 2024 brings with it an extra 24 hours for us to do something extra special with! Whilst many of us will most probably go about our daily business as usual, some may take the leap and get engaged. I wonder if for some, only having to get an anniversary present every 4 years has a sweet ring to it!
So, back to this well-known tradition; in certain cultures, it is considered acceptable for women to propose marriage to men during a leap year, particularly on February 29th, a date that occurs only once every four years. This tradition is often traced back to an old Irish legend or folklore, although its exact origins are somewhat uncertain.
According to this tradition, St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose. In response, St. Patrick supposedly decreed that women could propose to men during leap years, with February 29th being designated as the day for this purpose. While the tradition may have originated in Ireland, it has spread to various other countries and cultures around the world.
Thankfully, we all see the fun side to this old and light-hearted tradition and for many couples it is just seen as a lovely unique day to get engaged. Some men or women may have eluded the big question on Valentine’s Day this year to surprise their partner on the 29th!
